Recommended image sizes for blog posts/articles?

There isn't a right or wrong size when it comes to image sizes for blog posts. However, it's important that the image doesn't detract from the article. 

As an example, using an image with a very large size can take up the majority, if not all of the page if you aren't careful. This causes the reader to have to scroll on a page before reading even a single passage of text.
